When most homeowners think about their HVAC systems, they focus on the heating and cooling units. But heating and cooling aren’t the only functions of a home’s HVAC system. It should also work towards maintaining good indoor air quality.

Why You Should Install an Air Purification System

People living in newer homes benefit from improved construction techniques that make their homes better fortified against air leaks. They experience fewer issues related to poor insulation like drafts or inefficiencies in heating and cooling systems due to lost air, but the strong seals that solve these problems create another: dirty air gets trapped in homes more easily where it is recycled by the HVAC system.

There are many reasons to consider installing a whole-home air purification system, especially if:

  • There are people in the some with respiratory sensitives like asthma
  • Someone in the home smokes
  • There are pets in the home prone to shedding or that create excess dander
  • People are consistently sneezing, feeling congested, or suffering from headaches
  • The home smells musty
  • Surfaces require frequent dusting

Air purifying services provided by Summers Plumbing Heating & Cooling that include the installation of a filtration system can rectify all these issues and give you immediate relief from the symptoms and negative consequences of poor indoor air quality.

Different Air Purification Systems

Most HVAC systems come equipped with standard one-inch air filters that work to capture large particles like dirt and dust. Unfortunately, these filters cannot capture other, smaller particles that can have significant impacts on the air quality inside a home. Summers Plumbing Heating and Cooling can supply you with a variety of enhanced filtration options so your system can catch more than what these basic filters can.

Electrostatic Air Purifiers

An electrostatic air purifying system uses electric charges to create an environment that traps particulates inside a filter. Air flows through a chamber that ionizes any particulates floating in the air, giving them a positive electric charge. Once the air has been charged, it flows through a negatively charged filter, and the positively charged particulates suspended in the become attracted to the fibers of the filter. Because the particles are charged, it’s easier for these filters to capture not only large parties like dirt and dust but smaller particles as well.

Just like standard one-inch filters, electrostatic filters have to be routinely cleaned and replaced to maintain their effectiveness. However, electrostatic filters can be replaced with much less frequency than basic one-inch filters that only last one to three months.

Enhanced Air Purifiers

Even if you install thicker HVAC filters, also known as media filters, they won’t do much to significantly improve your home’s air quality. No matter how thick the filters are, they can still only trap particulates of a certain size, with anything smaller flowing right through them and into the air you breathe. Unfortunately, these harder-to-capture particulates are exactly the ones that cause the most health issues, especially for people with sensitive respiratory systems.

HEPA filter stands for high-efficiency particulate air filter. These specially designed filters utilize unique synthetic fibers to catch the microscopic particles that normal filters miss. Like other filters, HEPA filters need to be cleaned to work effectively. In fact, dirty HEPA filters can put a strain on your forced-air systems, since it’s more difficult to push air through the denser materials in HEPA filters when they’re dirty. Luckily, these filters typically last at least a year, so they can be replaced less often than traditional media filters.

UV Light Air Purifiers

Even heavy-duty HEPA filters can’t capture everything in the air that has the potential to affect people’s health. Ultraviolet light air purifiers work to take care of airborne viruses and bacteria by killing them before they can make you sick.

UV lights do nothing to combat particles like dirt and dust, so they are not a stand-alone system. They are used in conjunction with media or HEPA filters.
